For the first time ever a historical series of photographs from the early 1970s in L.A. The book Cholo Writing explores the genesis of these specific letterforms that paradoxically gave a visual identity to Los Angeles’ infinite banal suburbia. It has had a major influence on the visual expressions of Californian popular culture, including the lowrider, surf, skate and hip-hop movements. Cholo writing or placas can be seen as cousins of the baroque gothic calligraphies typical of Mexico, as a genuine expression of a border culture between Mexico and the United States. Cholo writing originally constitutes the vernacular handstyle created by the Mexican gangs in Los Angeles as far back as the 1940s: a neglected phenomenon that has a specific place in the history and development of the urban graffiti of the Western world, it is probably the oldest form of the “graffiti of names” in the 20th century, with its own aesthetic, evident long before the explosion in the early 1970s in New York. In this interview Chastanet gives us a condensed lesson in Cholo’s history.Ĭover of the book, Cholo Writing: Latino Gang Graffiti in Los Angeles by François Chastanet ( click here for a look inside ).Ĭhastanet: The term cholo derives from an Aztec word xolotl meaning ‘dog’ that was later turned on its head and used as a symbol of pride by the Mexican-American community in the context of the ethnic power movements of the 1960s, from which emerged the idea of La Raza or Chicano nationalism (e.g., Brown Berets in Watsonville). ![]() His current analysis illuminates how important these cultural writing (and tagging) forms are to their makers, and how they mark territories much like flags and coats of arms. ![]() Chastanet, an architect, graphic designer, typographer and photographer from France, has spent much of his time documenting graffiti and its relationship to architecture. This unique typographic language has been documented in a new book, Cholo Writing: Latino Gang Graffiti in Los Angeles ( Dokument Press), by François Chastanet, who previously published a photographic survey of graffiti in São Paulo, Pixaçao(disclosure: I contributed the foreword). Unlike its bulbous comic counterpart on the East Coast, Cholo has roots in curiously formal calligraphic and black letter traditions. Cholo writing is the style of graffiti used by Mexican gangs in Los Angeles.

As a 10-year-old, I went in already wanting to use The Sims to re-create my favourite characters from pop culture. It may be embarrassing to admit this, but my play-style in The Sims hasn't changed a huge amount in the last 20-odd years. It reminded me of how, perversely, technical and graphical improvements in games can actually be limiting our creativity in a way. Even though I remembered the process of the original CAS, I was honestly surprised by how limited I felt while picking just two skins - combining a pre-set head with a full-body multi-purpose outfit - for each character. In recent years I've lost entire days to The Sims 4's Create-A-Sim, tweaking everything from facial features to outfit accents in minute detail. Since we find ourselves taking a nostalgia trip, I can remember when this screenshot from the Hote Date expansion was legitimately the most exciting piece of game marketing I'd ever seen.īut it's hard to escape from the fact that even starting a new game of The Sims 1 in 2023 feels… off, if you're a fan of the newer games, even if you've been with the series from the start. I remember when this was my everyday life, oh I do. And in performance terms, if it's a little creaky at times (and my return did include one particularly distressing two-hours-of-gameplay-down-the-drain crash), it's certainly no worse now than it was back in the day. What I mean is that it looks nearly as good as I remember it, which is actually impressive when you think about it. ![]() Still, it's true that the original graphics still look surprisingly good: stylistically it's properly retro, as in it's what a retro-inspired artist would probably put together today. Even though the computer was old, the game was even older thus it was a little over-specced, and the game didn't look or run quite as fantastically as it did in its prime. I elected, on this occasion, to install The Sims on a Windows Vista machine from 2008, five years after the game's final expansion/update. Luckily, I had the presence of mind to hang on to those original CD-ROMs, so revisiting the franchise's origins to see how it's holding up these days was comparatively easy. As a pre-teen, I eagerly awaited the biannual visit to Toys R Us that would see me return home clutching my latest digital plaything. It wasn't until Maxis was acquired by Electronic Arts in 1997, and EA expressed interest in an expanded SimCity franchise - on the understanding that paid add-ons would be quickly forthcoming if the concept proved popular - that development on The Sims really got off the ground.įor most of The Sims' four-year lifespan, I was in lockstep with every new expansion pack release. A video about The Sims 4 in an article about The Sims 1? I know what you're thinking: it's just there to appease the algorithm, isn't it? (It is.)Īfter Little Computer People fizzled, there seemed to be little appetite among developers for returning to the "virtual dollhouse" genre, and Wright's higher-ups at Maxis were unsure whether the idea was worthy of investment when he first pitched The Sims to them in the early '90s. LCP also doesn't seem to have met sales expectations, judging by the fact that a series of planned add-on expansions never ended up getting made. This Activision title was reasonably well-received in its day, but largely dismissed as a low-challenge educational game suitable only for young children. Social simulation wasn't an entirely new genre, and indeed Wright drew inspiration from 1985's Little Computer People (alternatively known as House-On-A-Disk). As time went on, his creative interests would shift again, to also take in the lives of the people inside the buildings. Switching from macro- to micro-management, Wright's new spin-off project aimed to focus on the architectural design of individual houses. The game was the brainchild of Will Wright, the designer behind the SimCity series, who had decided to approach the world of his popular city-building franchise from a new angle. The original The Sims - now sometimes called The Sims 1 for the sake of clarity - was released in February 2000, and received regular updates via expansion packs through to October 2003. Start at the beginning, right? When faced with a self-imposed task as massive and daunting as writing a retrospective on The Sims franchise, going back to the very first game was the obvious launchpad. ![]() As The Plumbob Turns is a regular column in which RPS's in-house Sims fanatic Rebecca delves into the history of her favourite franchise. ![]() How I ended up with a new beading pattern ![]() I also forgot to mention you need to remember the first string of beads makes your first two rows, so you have to work that pattern into everything as well. The third row starts from the third bead and you finish by adding the second and third beads.Īre you confused? Well yes, so were we! I spent the entire class trying to work out how to get the lady started in a simple manner. But then the second row you would need to start with the second bead, work to the end, then add your first bead. So the first row you might read from the first bead along. This means that if you think of the tube as being opened out flat, in every new row, you will move one bead along in the pattern. Now, if you have ever done tubular Peyote, you will know it has a tricky little thing called a ‘step up’. It simply said, bead the tube and keep repeating the pattern until your bangle is the right length, then join the ends. It had no sort of explanation as to how to start a tube. Well, when I looked, the pattern was basically just a flat Peyote chart. She brought the free pattern into class to ask if I could get her started as she thought she would be fine if she could just get going. Then of course there was the annoyance of having bought the beads and not being able to use them… What Happened Next? So, instead of the beading being a pleasure, it had started to erode her self-esteem. It left her feeling frustrated because she couldn’t make the project. This was just as well since the pattern didn’t explain the technique! She already knew how to work in tubular Peyote. So, this lady had downloaded the pattern, bought the beads it suggested, then sat down one evening to start on the project. The photo of the finished bangle was fabulous and the pattern was free. It was made in tubular Peyote and it incorporated a pattern into the tube. ![]() She had downloaded a free pattern to make a really pretty bangle. Some months into our regular classes, she came along one day and told me she had been getting very frustrated. Then she would go home and, during the week, complete the project and try something else from a pattern she had found online. So, she would start a project in my class each week. She also fell completely in love with beading. She had a background in crafts, was very talented and when she started beading she took to it like the proverbial duck to water. ![]() Let me answer that by telling you a little story. So, keep reading! Why does it matter if my beading pattern is rubbish? I’m also going to give you the chance to get a paid pattern, of your choice, for free. I’m going to share with you some advice if you are looking for free beading patterns. Or, you might get a complete mess that makes no sense. You might be about to get an awesome project that is really well explained. Unless you know the designer or shop selling the pattern, you really don’t know what you’re going to get. The thing is, anyone can put together a beading pattern and make it available online. So, you might argue that if your pattern was free, at least you didn’t lose anything if it turns out to be rubbish! Actually, that applies to paid beading patterns as well. There is absolutely no guarantee that you’re going to get a good pattern. Basically, just about anywhere online – just google ‘free beading patterns’ and there you go! That’s the problem. ![]() Use the following registry key to change this setting: Weak RSA server host keys shorter than 1024 bits are rejected by default.
